Where You Hit It Outranks What You Hit It With
Gear effect on a modern driver head is strong enough that a strike toward the heel and a strike toward the toe produce different curvature, different spin, and different carry from the identical club and the identical swing. Two golfers with the same clubhead speed can differ by thirty yards purely because one finds the centre and the other does not.
So the first thing we establish is your pattern. Tape on the face, a dozen relaxed swings, and the cluster appears. Everything we discuss after that is anchored to it.
If the cluster is already tight and central, we tell you so, and the conversation shifts to whether a different shaft profile would add anything. Often it would not.

Playing Length
Stock drivers keep getting longer because longer measures well in a showroom. On the bench, shorter almost always tightens the strike pattern. We trim in quarter-inch steps and re-read the tape after each one, stopping the moment the cluster stops improving.
Losing a fraction of a mile per hour of head speed while gaining consistent centre contact is a trade that wins on the scorecard nearly every time.
Length findings we see often
- Stock 45.75″ trimmed to 45.00″
- Pattern tightening by 4–8 mm horizontally
- Swingweight needing 2–4 points of head weight back
- Grip build-up adjusted to keep hand pressure the same
Loft and Face Setting
Adjustable hosels have made loft a conversation rather than a commitment, which is good, but the settings are frequently left wherever the club was when it left the shop. We treat the sleeve as a genuine variable and test it against your delivered attack angle.
A golfer hitting down on the ball with a low-loft head is spending distance to buy a flight nobody asked for. That is usually a two-minute fix.

Shaft Weight and Profile
We treat shaft weight as a tempo question before a speed question. Golfers with a smooth transition often load a lighter shaft cleanly; golfers who pull hard from the top usually need mass to feel where the head is. Flex labels matter less than the weight class and where the shaft bends.
Two candidates at a time, alternating, same ball, same target. More than two and nobody can remember what the first one felt like.

Head Model
The last thing we look at, and often the least important. Modern driver heads at similar loft and similar centre-of-gravity placement behave more alike than the marketing suggests. Where they do differ meaningfully is in forgiveness on off-centre strikes — which is exactly why we needed your pattern first.
If your cluster is wide, head choice matters a great deal. If it is tight, it barely matters at all, and we will say so.

Three Ways This Session Ends
Keep the head, change the setup
Trim the length, adjust the sleeve, rebalance the swingweight. You walk out with the same driver behaving differently, for the cost of the session plus bench time.
Keep the head, change the shaft
The head is fine, the shaft is wrong for your transition. A reshaft costs a fraction of a new driver and usually delivers more of the improvement.
Replace the driver
Warranted when the head is genuinely old, damaged, or badly mismatched to your pattern. We order it built to the corrected specs, never to stock.
