What the Numbers on a Shaft Label Actually Mean

Weight, flex, torque, bend point, tip diameter. Five specifications, no industry standard between manufacturers for any of them, and a great deal of confusion as a result.

Ground rules

The Label Is a Starting Point, Not a Specification

A shaft marked "S" from one manufacturer can measure softer than one marked "R" from another. Nothing forces the letters to line up across brands, and they routinely do not.

That is not a scandal, it is simply how the market works. Each company sets its own reference for a given flex designation, and they choose those references to suit the golfers they expect to buy the product. The practical consequence is that flex letters are useful within one product family and close to meaningless between families.

What does compare cleanly across brands is weight, measured in grams, and frequency, measured in cycles per minute on a bench. Those are physical measurements rather than marketing categories. When we compare candidates during a session, those are the numbers we work from.

Specification one

Weight

Shaft weight is the single specification we pay most attention to, because it changes how the club feels through the transition more than anything else. A golfer who pulls hard from the top often needs mass to sense where the head is; a golfer with a smooth, gradual transition can load a light shaft cleanly and gain speed from it.

We think in ten-gram bands rather than exact figures. Moving from a sixty-gram driver shaft to a seventy is a change you will feel immediately; moving from sixty-five to sixty-seven is not.

Iron shafts run considerably heavier than wood shafts, and the jump between the two is worth thinking about. A very light iron shaft under a heavy head produces a balance point most golfers find hard to control.

Typical weight bands

  • Driver: 45–85 g
  • Fairway wood: 55–95 g
  • Hybrid: 65–105 g
  • Graphite iron: 55–110 g
  • Steel iron: 95–130 g
Specification two

Flex and Frequency

Flex describes how much a shaft bends under load. Frequency is how we measure it: clamp the butt, pluck the tip, and count the oscillations per minute. Higher frequency means a stiffer shaft.

Within a matched set, frequency should step up progressively from the longest club to the shortest. When it does not — and in mixed sets assembled over the years it frequently does not — certain clubs will feel out of place without the golfer being able to say why.

We check frequency across a set during full bag audits and flag any club that sits outside the progression. Fixing an outlier is often a tip trim rather than a new shaft.

Specification three

Bend Profile

Two shafts can share a weight and a frequency and still behave differently, because stiffness is not distributed evenly along the length. A shaft that is soft near the tip will present more loft at impact and launch higher; one that is stiff near the tip holds loft down and reduces spin.

Manufacturers describe this with terms like low kick, mid kick, and high kick, or by publishing a profile chart. The charts are more useful than the labels, because a "mid" designation covers a wide range depending on who is printing it.

In practice, we treat bend profile as the fine adjustment after weight and frequency have been settled. It rarely rescues a shaft that is the wrong weight to begin with.

Profile shorthand

  • Soft tip: higher launch, more spin
  • Stiff tip: lower launch, less spin
  • Soft butt: more loading feel in transition
  • Stiff butt: firmer, more controlled feel

Torque

Torque measures resistance to twisting along the shaft's length, expressed in degrees. Lower numbers twist less. It is widely misunderstood as a straightforward quality measure, where lower is assumed to be better, and that is not the case.

Torque and weight travel together: lighter shafts almost always show higher torque figures simply because there is less material resisting the twist. Comparing torque between shafts of different weights tells you very little.

Torque also affects feel more than it affects ball flight for most amateur swing speeds. A very low torque shaft feels boardy to a golfer who does not generate the speed to load it.

  • Affects feel more than flight at moderate speeds
  • No cross-brand measurement standard exists
Specification five

Tip Type and Trimming

Iron shafts come in two tip families. Taper tips are pre-sized for each iron number and are installed without tip trimming. Parallel tips are one diameter throughout and are trimmed at the tip according to a chart to produce the correct stiffness for each club.

Getting the tip trim wrong on a parallel shaft is one of the few build errors that cannot be undone. Once material is gone, it is gone, and the club will play stiffer than intended for the rest of its life.

We record the raw length and every trim on your spec card. If a shaft ever needs replacing, the replacement can be built to exactly the same specification without guesswork.

  • Taper tip: no tip trim, butt trim only
  • Parallel tip: trimmed per manufacturer chart
  • Raw length recorded before any cut
  • All trims written on the spec card
